Considering I was pregnant for the first 8 months, running around after a toddler at the same time, and then taking care of 2 children for the last 4 months I'd say this was a pretty successful year in crafting. :) And I'm so glad I get to make most of it for my little kiddos. (I even think I left a few things out...like the Square Bears are coming to mind. Oh well.)

A Cuddly Quilt for my Cuddly Baby
Doesn't every baby deserve a nice cozy cuddle blankie? I think so. And my son received TONS of them. My daughter...well, we'll just say that she is in desperate need of one. And being her first Christmas I think she deserves a special little treasure. Enter...MOMMY! :) It's such a joy making things for my children and I just adore this little blankie. I stitched her name on it, and the backing/binding is this super soft Bambi Minky. :) Just perfect for snoozing under when she gets a bit older. I can't wait to wrap her up in it on Christmas morning.
This quilt is from a set a bought at the quilt show if you'll remember. However, I didn't want to make a full sized crib quilt, so I adjusted the sizing to my liking and voila! I also opted for some simple classic quilting with a walking foot rather than free motion. That Bambi fabric is not conducive to free motion quilting, and since I was on a time crunch (read - I finished this last nigh at 11:30 p.m.) I figured simple was best. I'm really happy with it though...I think simple works for this quilt. Especially with the fuzzy backing. Those straight lines really stand out beautifully (if I do say so myself).

Pretty Bird Baby Gift
Now that I know how to sew I love to make more personal gifts. There's always something nice about homemade items. I remembered a free bird pattern from Spool that I had printed off a while back, and a fun baby gift idea popped into my head.
I decided to make a bird filled with various textures, and since they're good diaper bag sized toys I made two. One for the diaper bag and one for home. :) The head of the bird is just filled with Polyfil so it's nice and soft. Fun for squishing or biting. lol Then the body has a small amount of Polyfil and some rice. This gives the toy a little weight to it, but is fun for squishing as well. Then the tail is the best part of all (I think). I wanted it to be crinkly...you know, like so many baby toys are. So, I went to the pantry, opened a cereal box, and cut off a piece of the bag inside the box. I did wash it VERY thoroughly as this is for a baby and you don't want to expose them to peanuts and whatever else may be in your cereal product. I used the tail to make a pattern for the crinkly inside, cut it out, and stuffed it in. :) Tada...crinkle tail. Sew up the tail and voila! Done. Aren't they darling???
I thought about adding some felt wings on the sides, but the fabric was just to darling to cover up further. Also, in the future, if I had some handy I would consider making the belly out of another texture fabric like corduroy maybe? I was purely working with the stuff I had on hand since this was a spur of the moment idea. What else would you stuff the bird with to make fun textures for baby? I wanted to put a bell inside, but I need an appropriate sized plastic something to put it in so it will make noise when it's played with. A bell in stuffing isn't very fun. lol

Vroom...Vroom...BEEP!
Yesterday I completed my son's play mat for Christmas. I'm kind of sad that I have to wrap it all up now, but I know he'll be excited to play with it. Wouldn't you be??? :) I'll have to buy him some of those wooden stop signs and things for his birthday. The fabric (and play mat top) are all from Clothworks "On The Go" line.
